Satellite mission to discover mountains hidden under ice

It follows an article published on the European Space Agency (ESA) web page, highlighting the benefits the SAOCOM-CS mission could bring to the scientist community through the use of a completely new technique called tomography. The idea behind this project, which is carried out by ESA in partnership with the Argentinian Space Agency (CONAE), is to develop one small satellite named SAOCOM-CS (aka TangoSat) to fly in tandem with CONAE’s state-of-the-art SAOCOM-1B remote sensing radar satellite. Tomography would allow to create 3D maps of earth’s surface even under ice and snow. ESA will keep evaluating the feasibility of SAOCOM-CS mission and a decision whether or not to build the satellite is expected in early 2016.

REVEALING MOUNTAINS HIDING UNDER ICE

Results from a recent field campaign, which was organised to help investigate the potential of a new Earth observation mission concept, have provided a unique 3D glimpse of the peaks and troughs under the Mittelbergferner glacier in the Austrian Alps.

The campaign, with the somewhat unwieldy name of AlpTomoSAR, supports the development of the Saocom Companion Satellite (Saocom-CS) mission. This new concept is thanks to collaboration with Argentina and is based on making 3D observations from space using two radar satellites in tandem.

La ESA estudia la posibilidad de aprovechar y ampliar las capacidades de la misión SAOCOM 1B a través de un microsatélite acompañante con capacidad de “solo recepción” denominado SAOCOM-CS.

Es de público conocimiento que la Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE) se encuentra desarrollando la misión satelital SAOCOM, la cual estará conformada por dos naves (SAOCOM 1A y SAOCOM 1B) portadoras éstas de antenas radar SAR que operarán en banda L, volando en órbita LEO (por Low Earth Orbit, en inglés).
